Cartoon artist to begin ‘Exploring PAPER’ residency at Manchester’s PAPER gallery.
Rochdale based Artist Vincent James will begin his 6 week residency at PAPER on Sat 25 July.
Throughout the residency Vincent will open up his studio at PAPER to the public every Saturday 11am- 5pm (Sat 25 July – Sat 5 Sept)
Vincent James is best known for using cartoon imagery to create surreal sculptures, paintings and animations. During the residency Vincent will explore stop-motion films that spill, fly or explode out of the studio.
In it’s third year, the ‘Exploring PAPER’ residency has previously been undertaken by Liverpool artist, Frances Disley in 2014 and Oldham based artist Rachel Wrigley in 2013.
The ‘Exploring PAPER’ residency was set up by Manchester gallery PAPER in 2013 in a bid to support North West artists with space, time and professional support to explore their practice.
After completing his MA at Goldsmiths in 1999, Vincent James has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work is part of the Touchstones Art Gallery Permanent Collection, and Frederick R Weisman Art Foundation Collection, California. And visitors to Bury’s Light Night over the last three years will remember his site-specific installations projected onto empty shop windows.
Vincent James was one of over 50 Artists who submitted a proposal for the residency and said; “I would welcome the chance to share the work as it progresses with the public every Saturday during the residency. I would like to give visitors the opportunity to become involved in the work by talking about the ideas or doing some stop-motion animation.”
He will have a solo exhibition of new work developed throughout the residency at PAPER in January 2016.
